When a child is born, it is not up to him or her what race, gender, or social class he’s born into. Yet, he is treated and nurtured based on these physical attributes that he had no control over. A male African American living in the outer boroughs is arguably given some of the harshest stereotypes and lowest expectations for success. Knowing this, Wright created Bigger Thomas, the main character in Native Son. Bigger lives in a one bedroom apartment with his family and works as a driver for a family on the white side of Chicago. Bigger is surrounded by people telling him that he will not succeed and that he will end up a criminal as â€Å"every† person sharing his physical appearance has. This exposure to the constant blending of nature and nurture forced African American’s to see themselves as forced pr oducts of white ideologies. Bigger believes that the whites live â€Å"right down in here in [his] stomach† (Wright 21). Bigger feels that he is constantly fed what the whites want him to be, so much so that he is now physically ingesting it. This constant reinforcement of the same ideals causes a loss of self in the individual. During the 1930s and 1940s Chicago was a divided environment. It was filled with whites who openly hated blacks, whites who wanted to make a difference in blacks’ lives, and blacks who felt alone and scared. Bigger knew he had no power to help his family out of this environment, he also knew that if â€Å"he allowed himself to feel [the] fullness [of] how they lived he would be swept out of himself with fear and despair† (Wright 13). The feeling of guilt Bigger had for not being able to help them caused him to distance himself from them emotionally and often physically. Since I was a child, my family and my teachers used to call me â€Å"Doctor Sumaya†. The less unfortunate were dumped in dungeons, compared with which, those in Newgate, occupied by the most atrocious felons, tried , found guilty and under sentence of death are palaces. This demonstrates that the two classes were unequal, the poor who committed petty crimes, where held in revolting cramped cells where as the 1st and 2nd class who committed serious offences such as murder, were held in prisons that were hygienic and pleasant environments to be in, the law protected the wealthy. This evidence points out that what class you were held under depends on how they treated you, they labelled you and it was impossible to be counted as an individual. In this chapter Oliver is trialled by the magistrate, Mr Fang. The significance of his name makes his personality sound immoral, like he is a sharp person. He is seen as the devil, having fang teeth, trying to get his teeth into anybody and drag them down. This links to how the Beadle acts towards the children. This resulted in Oliver; he didnt have a voice, while stood nervously in front of the magistrate. He was unable to speak for himself at this point, like he didnt have the right. People believed the poor shouldnt have a say because they will always be guilty. They judged those unfortunate and made them appear troublesome. Dickens betrays the magistrate he creates him as being a drunken man and all over the place. He is also comical, the magistrate tries to pin the blame on anybody, and he even accuses Mr Brownlow of stealing the book asking, Is it paid for? It demonstrates how Mr Fang just wanted to find someone guilty so he could depart from the office. To sum up I believe Dickens defends the lower class and shows in detail how the poor were treated. Also how unequal the two class divisions were. Theme of Childhood in The Prelude and The Schoolboy Paper Romanticism, a literary trend during the period between 1780 and 1830, was heavily influenced by the social and political changes of the era experienced in Great Britain. These changes were a catalyst in literature as writers, in particular poets, produced highly influential and memorable work. Within these works major themes could be detected such as childhood for example. Both William Wordsworth and William Blake produced some of the most memorable poetic literature of the Romantic period that reflected the nature of childhood. The set extract has been taken from William Wordsworth autobiographical poem, The Prelude. Within these verse paragraphs, the reader is given an insight of Wordsworth upbringing, who as the speaker of the poem recollects his childhood memories. As such the reader is able to detect the magnificence of childhood that Wordsworth believed was fundamental in his growth as a poet. The Prelude makes use of iambic pentameter which in conjunction with enjambment, the long uninterrupted sentences provide the fluency of a conversation, a natural speech pattern which the reader can relate. The extract opens with the speakers account of growing up in that beloved Vale (l.309), Wordsworth attended Hawkshead Grammar School in Esthwaite from 1779 -to 1788, (Owens Johnson, 1998, page 428). While a formal education took place, nature provided a symbolic education, Fosterd alike by beauty and by fear (l.307), and as such adopting the role of a substitute parent, therefore nurturing the speaker as a child. The speaker narrates how he would wander half the night (l.315), setting traps and becoming a fell destroyer (l.319). The metaphor symbolises the first stems of guilt the speaker experiences. The tone of the poem becomes more urgent with the speakers repetition of hurrying, (l.320-321), as the progresses at a quicker reflecting the urgency of the speaker. There appears to be a hidden force in nature, the speaker feels trouble to the peace, (l.323) as he is overcome to take the bird of anothers toils (l.327). With the speakers But (l.6), providing a link between the first and second stanza, the scene transforms from the peaceful countryside to the forbidding environment of the schoolroom. The repetition of in a summer morn (l.1, l.6) in the first and second stanza establishes a parallel link providing a comparison that shows an enlightening contrast of joy in the first instance, and melancholy in the second. The lessons taught by the teacher have stifled the speakers spirit with its dreary shower, (l.15). Metaphors are once again employed in the fourth stanza as the speaker continues, How can the bird, that born for joy, Sit in a cage and sing? (l.16-17). Children have been denied the joys of nature and are forced to sit in the classroom, which is therefore the metaphorical cage. Blake believed children were not allowed to enjoy the freedom of their youth with a formal education. This education does more harm than good as the fears of punishment is what drives the system and no genuine passion for learning is instilled into the child whose droop his tender wing, And forgets his youthful spring, (l.19-20). The final stanzas of The Schoolboy illustrate how brutal the education system can be to a child as the metaphors of plants and seasonal changes play an important theme. The buds are nipped, And blossoms blown away, And if the tender plants are stripped (l.21-23), connects the metaphor of a caged bird from the fourth stanza. Neither the flower nor the bird feel happy feels happy with the separation from the outside world, in parallel with the speaker who also feels the isolation from nature. This to me is an example of a great teacher, one who will continue to do what he or she thinks is right regardless of whether it earns her the disapproval of the rest of the staff. The movie October Sky gives a very positive representation of a teacher. She is a role model, a friend, a source of information, a defender, and a fighter. She is portrayed as compassionate, understanding, and very beneficial in keeping the students directed toward their goals. This would seem to say that teachers need these qualities in order to fully relate to their students. A teacher can not only be there for informational needs, but must also stand behind her students and be prepared to defend their rights to discover themselves. The first experiment used Trypticase Soy Nutrient Agar (TSA), which can grow a wide variety of organisms and contains casein and soybean meal and a minute NaCl, to study the effectiveness of alcohol as a skin antiseptic. The second experiment tested the effectiveness of different kinds of mouthwashes as antiseptics using TSA as well. Experiment number three explored the normal human flora existing on skin and in nasal cavities, and two types of agar were used, including TSA and Mannitol Salt Agar, which contains manitol sugar, phenol red, and 7.5% NaCl. Mannitol Salt Agar tests for the presence of staphylococci bacteria that can survive in the salt that inhibits the growth of most other bacteria. Some forms of staph bacteria ferment mannitol and produce a yellow color around the colonies, which can easily be seen against the red background. The fourth experiment studied the number of bacteria in a diluted sa mple of uncooked hamburger meat using nutrient agar and a Quebec counter to count the colonies. The final experiment involved the growth of yeast cells under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Understanding evidence in evidence-based diagnostic radiography: theoretical perspectives and the research process in two published journal articles To understand the evidence provided in evidence-based diagnostic radiography, one must first define the parameters in which the research took place. With regard to the articles being analysed, (Mackay et al. 2012 and Carlsson and Carlsson 2013) a discussion between the different theoretical perspectives and types of data acquired during the research process will be explored. Comparisons and differences will then be identified along with any facilitators or barriers that either assisted or impeded the research in question. Finally, the evaluation of the process and outcomes are made. This step will either validate or refute the findings and whether they are adopted into mainstream clinical practice. There may be many barriers to implementing EBP into diagnostic radiographic practice. First and foremost, patient cooperation is key. In an age of ‘expert patients’, informed service users may decide what is their best course of treatment regardless of clinical expertise advising to the contrary. This barrier not only could negate the clinician, but could also render the EBP ineffective if the patient decides not to oblige. In order to help facilitate implementation of EBP in this case, a tailored explanation to the patient may be helpful. Due to all service users being unique, this may require the radiographer to access the patient’s individual needs and try a different approach in order to implement the EBP. Another barrier that may arise could come from radiographers who are ‘set in their ways’. Their refusal to change could impede the use of EBP from being put into operation. Training and education in this scenario could help eliminate this barrier and as a result, facilitate best practice. Without employing EBP in diagnostic radiography, the field would never evolve
